This website is intended as a guide for orientation course facilitators of "Going the Distance: An Orientation and Support Program for Online Training Facilitators."  The materials in this guide will support you in your work with participants and may be used as reference material for both you (the course facilitator) and the course participants.  As the facilitator, it is up to you to select the instructional content that best suites the needs of your specific audience. You are encouraged to use the course participants as additional sources of expertise and to work together to build a collective knowledge about facilitating online courses.  
Upon completion of the three-module, asynchronous orientation course, it is the expectation of the E-Learning, Inc. Program Design Team that course participants will:
  • Meet the course goals and objectives
  • Understand the purpose of and enroll in the mentoring and on-going support program
  • Apply the skills and strategies of the orientation course to the facilitation of online training courses

Program Overview

GOING the DISTANCE: Program Overview

Intended Audience:  This is a purchasable training program created by E-Learning, Inc.  It is intended for corporations with an internal training department who wish to move their training program from a face-to-face model to a distance learning model.
Recommended Timeline:  The E-Learning, Inc. Program Design Team recommends a timeline of one to two weeks per module and an additional one to two weeks for completion of the summative assessment project.  This extended timeline recommendation is intended to allow for participant workload and can be modified as needed.

Summative Assessment

Participants will work in learning teams to create a digital learning experience.  The experience is to include content/materials and instructional strategies that facilitate learning about a selected topic.

ORIENTATION COURSE: Goals & Objectives

Goal 1: Participants will develop an understanding of effective pedagogical approaches to online instruction.
  • Objective 1a: Participants will examine the advantages of facilitating over instructing in online courses.

  • Objective 1b: Participants will make use of strategies to increase learner engagement and participation in online courses.

  • Objective 1c: Participants will determine which strategies serve to create community in online courses.

Goal 2: Participants will explore technological tools that can be used to develop and share online course content or as a resource for online learners.

  • Objective 2a: Participants will justify the use of digital presentation tools in online courses.

  • Objective 2b: Participants will create a digital document using at least one online collaboration tool.   

  • Objective 2c: Participants will compare the features of at least two online organizational tools.

Goal 3: Participants will learn strategies for conducting formative and summative assessments and providing feedback in online courses.

  • Objective 3a: Participants will create at least 2 formative and 1 summative assessments to accompany an online learning experience.

  • Objective 3b: Participants will use constructive feedback to support at least 3 peers in their learning.
